In the early part of the 20th century, the movie musical was on the rise. Dancing moved easily from stage to screen, and became bigger, more potent, ever more spectacular - and a lasting love affair with the movie-going public was born.
These extraordinary choreographed moments light up the screen and provide some of the most memorable moments in cinema history?
This will be a celebratory review of dance films through clips, concentrating on the heyday of musicals and dance. The Discovering Film team of Ian Nathan, Bonnie Greer, Derek Malcolm, Neil Norman & Stephen Armstrong meet to select their favourite moments. Whether from the early days of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers in Swing time and Top Hat, the spellbinding Nicholas brothers in Stormy Weather, the unbelievable Gene Kelly in American in Paris & Singing in the Rain, the melodrama of West Side Story, the insanity of the Blues Brothers, Cyd Charisse in The Band Wagon, the adored Baby in Dirty Dancing, to the imaginative recent hit La La Land. Each of the 25 films that will be reviewed, celebrated and enjoyed by our movie lovers building to a number one moment in dance on film.
