On the evening of Thursday 3 May 2007 in Praia da Luz, a holiday resort in the Algarve region of Portugal, Madeleine Beth McCann, a three-year-old English girl, disappears from her bedroom on the ground floor of the residence, where she was staying with her parents and siblings. Initial investigations by the Portuguese Polícia Judiciária concluded that Madeleine had been kidnapped. The story has generated great attention from the international media, raising controversy regarding the investigations conducted by the Portuguese police, accused of delays and superficiality, and the conduct of Madeleine's parents. On 4 June 2020, the German Federal Prosecutor's Office announced that a 43-year-old German citizen named Christian Brückner, formerly a protagonist of sexual abuse and pedophilia, is suspected of the kidnapping and murder of Madeleine McCann, as well as of a German child; the man lived in Portugal, right in the Algarve region, between 1995 and 2007 and allegedly entered the hotel room for a theft but then decided to take the child away.
