The Cold War and Cinema will be told in 3 episodes with the world at the end of WW2 where the United States and the Soviet Union fought together as allies against the Axis powers. However, the relationship between the two nations was a tense one. Americans had long been wary of Soviet communism and Russian leader Joseph Stalin’s tyrannical rule of his own country. The Soviets resented the Americans’ decades-long refusal to treat the USSR as a legitimate part of the international community as well as their delayed entry into World War II, which resulted in the deaths of tens of millions of Russians.
Each episode features the great films that told the stories of the era, propaganda, nuclear fear, a change in the US society, the spy games of CIA, KGB and MI5 and the rise and fall of the USSR and East Germany (and everything in between). Cinema contributors will talk about the era, the film industry both as it was happening in real time, and how this period in cinema continues to be a mainstay to this day. Stories retold, as the 20th century provides an endless well of storytelling.
