Rivers. From the very start of civilisation - and probably even before - they have been the lifeblood of trade and travel. Just about every city of note around the world - and especially across Europe - was first established beside a river. Rivers have inspired art, literature and music. They have been the source of legend, myths and folk lore. Their flowing waters not only sustained life, but enabled connections with a wider world, facilitating the flow of ideas, theories and beliefs. the very building blocks of society. So, it’s not surprising that we connect so deeply and innately with rivers, from the romantic encounters to the adventurous escapades. Rivers are part of us. In this series we’ll be exploring the history, geography and culture of three of Europe’s greatest rivers - the Danube, the Main and the mighty Rhine.
