Tangled Roots is a concise and lucid presentation of the basic concepts and decisive events in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It arranges them on a timeline and a spatial map, connected by a variety of points of view and positions concerning the conflicting parties. Each of the 6 episodes begins with the following questions: “What is it about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that won't let it end? Is what happened really that unforgivable and unsolvable?"
Anat Zeltser and Modi Bar-On return to this story, but this time they try to tell it, not as told in a fight but as taught in a lesson. It begins at the end of the 19th century, when Jerusalem awakens from its long Ottoman sleep and returns to the center of international attention, the years of coexistence between the Palestinian Arab majority and the Jewish minority begins to crumble when the pioneers of Jewish nationalism meet the sprouts of Arab nationalism. The British, who conquered Palestine during World War I, hold contradictory promises about Jews and Arabs, and the two nascent nationalist movements begin their collision course. With incredible attention to detail, researchers in this program have uncovered incredible documents from the time that tell the story of this twice-promised land in a way never done before.
