The Manson Family was a gang and sect, led by criminal Charles Manson, active in California during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The group consisted of about 100 followers, who lived an unconventional lifestyle and frequently used psychoactive drugs and hallucinogenics. Family members became convinced that Manson was a manifestation of Jesus Christ and believed his prophecies of an impending apocalyptic race war. In 1969, family members entered the home of Hollywood actress Sharon Tate and killed her and four others. Members of the Manson family also committed a number of other murders, assaults, misdemeanors, burglaries and street vandalism.
